Five minutes won’t untangle your whole life. It can give you room to notice what you’re carrying into the day—or what you’re looking forward to.
Choose one prompt from the section that fits your morning. Write a few lines; fragments count. If a question opens something bigger than five minutes can hold, jot down a line to return to later. You don’t have to finish the thought to put down the pen.
When You Want a Quick Check-In
- What was the first thing you thought about this morning, before you decided to think about anything?
- Describe how you slept in one honest sentence. Then write what that sentence suggests you need today.
- Notice your jaw, shoulders, and hands. What feels comfortable or uncomfortable? Is there a small adjustment you’d like to make?
- If this morning came with a weather report for your mood, what would it say?
- What’s left over from your dreams, even if the plot is gone and only the feeling remains?
- Finish this sentence: “Right now I’d rather be…” Is there a small piece of that you could have today?
When the Day Already Feels Too Full
- List everything on your mind, fast and unsorted. Circle the one item that would make tonight feel lighter if it were done.
- Which task could you ask someone to share or take over? Draft the request.
- What does the “good enough” version of the task you’re dreading look like?
- What are you trying to fit into today just because you think you should? Do you still want to make room for it?
- Where could you leave a ten-minute gap in today’s schedule? Would you use it for something, or simply leave it empty?
- What time do you want to stop working, cleaning, or answering messages today? Write it down, along with what you’ll do afterward.
When It’s an Ordinary Day Worth Noticing
- What will you probably do on autopilot today? Describe how you might do it once with your full attention.
- What are you looking forward to, even slightly? Lunch, a podcast, the moment you take your shoes off—small counts.
- Who are you likely to see today, and what’s one thing you’re genuinely curious about in their life right now?
- Look around the room you’re in. Choose one object and write about how it came to be yours.
- What part of your usual morning would you miss if your routine changed?
- What sensory detail would you like to catch today: a smell, a sound, a particular kind of light?
When Something Is Weighing on You
- What conversation keeps replaying in your head? Write the part you wish you’d said, then consider whether it still needs saying.
- Name the worry in plain words, as if explaining it to someone who has never met you. Does it look different on paper?
- What part of this situation is in your hands today, and what part isn’t?
- What would you say to a friend who woke up feeling exactly the way you do? Read it back as if it were written to you.
- What do you know for sure about what’s troubling you, and what are you guessing?
- What would kindness toward yourself look like before noon?
When You’re Thinking About Your People
- Who crossed your mind recently for no obvious reason? Write the text you’d send if you reached out today.
- What did someone do this past week that made your day easier? Write what you’d like them to know.
- Whose message have you been meaning to answer, and what’s really keeping you from replying?
- Who would you like a little more time with? Describe a simple way to spend time together that would suit both of you.
- What do you wish someone understood about you right now, and who is that someone?
When You Have Room to Think Bigger
- What’s something you believed a year ago that you no longer do? What helped you see it differently?
- What are you quietly getting better at, even if no one else has noticed?
- Give this season of your life a title. What detail from an ordinary day explains your choice?
- What have you been saving for “someday” that could start, in some tiny form, this week?
- What do you want more of this month, and what would have to move over to make room for it?
- Write a two-sentence note to read tonight. What would you like to remind yourself of, no matter how the day goes?
